    What is domain expiry monitoring?

Domain expiry monitoring is the automated tracking of when a domain's registration runs out. A monitor reads the registration record from the registry, warns the owner at set intervals before the expiry date and raises an alert if the domain lapses or is no longer registered. It catches the renewal that failed because a card expired, a registrar account changed hands or the auto-renew setting was switched off, before the website, email and every service on that domain stop working.

    Key Features

Everything you need for Domain Expiry Monitoring.

    Warnings Before Expiry

Get a warning 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before the domain expires, or choose your own thresholds up to 365 days. Each threshold alerts once per expiry date, and a renewal resets them.

Down Only When It Really Is

The check goes down only when the domain has expired or is no longer registered. A slow or unreachable registry never raises a false alarm.

    RDAP With WHOIS Fallback

Registration data comes from the registry's RDAP service, found through the IANA bootstrap, with a WHOIS fallback for TLDs without RDAP. Each domain is looked up about twice a day.

The Registered Domain, Not the Host

Enter a domain or one of its subdomains. A subdomain such as shop.example.co.uk is reduced to the registered domain, example.co.uk, using the public suffix list.

    Alerts on 20+ Channels

Send expiry warnings and outages to email, SMS, phone calls, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Telegram, Discord, PagerDuty, Opsgenie, webhooks and more.

    Dashboard, App and CLI

See the expiry date, days left and registrar in the dashboard, follow your domains in the mobile app, and list them from the terminal with the Xitoring CLI.

    Who it's for

    Domain Expiry Monitoring Use Cases

See how teams across industries use Xitoring to keep their infrastructure reliable.

    E-Commerce

An expired store domain stops sales and order emails in the same minute. Renewal warnings give you weeks to act instead of hours.

    SaaS Companies

Product, API and status-page domains often sit with different registrars. Watch them all from one dashboard.

    Agencies & MSPs

Keep track of client domains you don't control at the registrar, and tell clients about renewals before they become emergencies.

    Enterprises

Large portfolios of brand and campaign domains are easy to lose track of. Catch the one nobody remembered to renew.

    Hosting Providers

Spot customer domains about to lapse before support tickets arrive about websites and mailboxes that stopped working.

    Education & Public Sector

Long-running sites and mail domains change owners over the years. Monitoring keeps renewals from falling through the cracks.

    Built for Real Domain Portfolios

    Registration at a Glance

Every domain check shows its expiry date, the days left in green, orange or red, and the registrar on record.

No Noise When Data Is Missing

If a registry doesn't answer or publishes no expiry date, the check shows the date as unknown instead of alerting.

    One Place for Every Renewal

Track domains from different registrars side by side, next to the SSL certificates and uptime checks that depend on them.

    Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Domain Expiry Monitoring.

How does Xitoring find a domain's expiry date?
It asks the registry's RDAP service, located through the IANA bootstrap file, for the domain's registration record and reads the expiration date and registrar from it. For TLDs without RDAP it falls back to WHOIS. Each domain is checked about twice a day.
    When will I be warned?
By default 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before the expiry date. You can pick your own thresholds, up to 365 days. Each threshold sends one warning per expiry date, and renewing the domain resets them.
When does the check go down?
Only when the domain has expired or is not registered. Before that you get warnings, not an outage. If a registry is unreachable or returns no usable date, the check shows the expiry as unknown and doesn't alert.
What should I enter as the domain?
Enter only the name, without https:// or a path. IP addresses aren't accepted, and a subdomain is reduced to its registered domain, so shop.example.co.uk is checked as example.co.uk. Internationalized domain names must be entered in punycode, for example xn--mnchen-3ya.de for münchen.de.
Does it work for every TLD?
It works for every TLD whose registry publishes registration data over RDAP or WHOIS. Some country-code registries, such as .de, publish no expiry date at all. For those domains the expiry shows as unknown and Xitoring can only detect that a domain is no longer registered.
Is domain expiry monitoring included in the free plan?
Yes. The free plan includes one domain expiry check, the same as for SSL certificate checks.
How is this different from SSL certificate monitoring?
SSL monitoring watches the certificate your server presents, which you renew with your certificate authority. Domain expiry monitoring watches the domain registration itself, which you renew with your registrar. If the domain lapses, a valid certificate doesn't help, so most teams monitor both.
