What is Phone Call Notification?
Phone Call notifications trigger an automated voice call to your phone whenever a critical incident is detected. This is the most intrusive and effective alerting method, ensuring you wake up or stop what you're doing to address urgent issues.
Why Use Phone Call Notifications?
- Impossible to ignore — A ringing phone demands attention
- Critical escalation — Perfect for P1/P0 incidents
- Works without internet — Only requires cellular signal
- On-call reliability — Best channel for after-hours emergencies
How to Configure Phone Call Notifications
Step 1: Create a Notification Role
- Log in to your Xitoring Dashboard
- Go to Settings → Notification Roles
- Click Create New Role
- Name it (e.g., "Critical Alerts - Phone")
Step 2: Add Your Phone Number
- Click Add Contact in the notification role
- Select Phone Call as the channel
- Enter your phone number with country code
- Verify the number
Step 3: Assign to Critical Monitors
- Navigate to your most critical monitors
- Under Triggers, assign the phone call notification role
- Set appropriate thresholds so calls only trigger for real emergencies
Step 4: Send a Test Call
- Click Send Test to receive a test call
- Confirm the call comes through clearly
Best Practices
- Reserve for critical incidents only — Don't use for warnings or informational alerts
- Pair with escalation policies — call only if Slack/email alerts go unacknowledged
- Set up quiet hours exceptions for phone calls during maintenance windows
- Use alongside PagerDuty or Opsgenie for sophisticated on-call rotations
